GLOSSARY OF TERMS

BALANCER A cone shaped cable drum changes the lever arm during cable extension which results in minimal or no pulling force. The load can be adjusted to float with no increasing or decreasing forces. Kromer "Zero Gravity Tool Balancers have wide cold rolled springs made from thin strips of steel, where all other balancers use narrow thick strips of steel that are heat treated. This heat treating process results in hydrogen embrittlement and notch sensitive steel with 1/5 of the life of a Kromer cold rolled spring.

BASIC CABLE

Available with the anchoring ferrule compressed on the free end. The cable ferrule for the free end should be ordered for installation. Refer to model’s parts’ list for various lengths.

CABLE ASSEMBLY Includes the basic cable, rubber buffer or ball, cable clamp, socket, wedge, trigger snap and ferrule.

CABLE CLAMP

A critical part of the cable assembly that positions the rubber buffer or ball on the cable. It must be tightened securely to prevent excessive cable drum rotation. While not recommended, it may be moved upwards to make minor adjustments to change the retracted position of the load. A ferrule is compressed on the cable below the clamp to prevent it from being lowered and allowing excessive drum rotation. It should be set to the specifications to maximize spring life and optimize Zero Gravity performance. (4.9 feet from the anchor end of the cable for Model 7228, 6.5 feet for Models 7221, 7230 and 7240 and 9.8 feet for Model 7250.) The cable clamp and buffer must be at or near the nozzle before any service or repair is safe.

CABLE DRUM ASSEMBLY

Precision manufactured injected aluminum with 20% more strength and 50% of the weight of cast steel. The drum must use factory supplied anit-rotational 5mm cable only to prevent premature failure. Replacement includes both bearings, the cable limiter, safety detent and drum cover.

CABLE FERRULE This oblong metal clip slides over the free end of the cable and must be firmly secured. It is an integral safety feature of the cable socket and wedge to prevent the free end of the cable from slipping through the socket when uploading occurs. It also prevents the free end of the cable from fraying resulting in loose strands of wire projecting and causing an injury.
CABLE LIMITER Safety feature on models 7240 and larger. It is a spring-loaded detent that engages through the bottom of the housing wall next to the nozzle to prevent the cable from bottoming out where the load would pull against the ferrule. When quick changing the cable on line, the cable limiter must be depressed with a screwdriver to position the cable anchor where it is accessible from the window on the side of the housing.
CABLE SOCKET

The free end of the cable can be lengthened or shortened at the time of installation, using the socket and wedge to position the load. It is critical that the wedge is installed inside the socket or the load will fall. The trigger snap prevents the wedge from falling out. A SAFETY REQUIREMENT DICTATES THAT A CABLE FERRULE BE INSTALLED, ONLY ON THE FREE END OF THE CABLE AT LEAST 1 INCH ABOVE THE SOCKET.

DRUM LOCKING PIN

Recessed into the back of the housing on models 7230 and 7240 on the cone, and on the bottom of the 7250 series. It is recessed and spring loaded to prevent accidental contact or damage. Its function is to prevent the drum from rotating during on line quick cable changes, and any other emergency. It is engaged by depressing the screw pin and rotating 1/4 turn clockwise to lock. It remains depressed until it is turned 1/4 turn counter clockwise and unlocked and then it springs back flush with the outer edge of the housing.
HANGING SUSPENSION

7221 - Includes a Locking Safety Hanger and pin, a floating and rotating hanger, and a hanger dowel with a cotter pin. It should be installed with the Locking Screw Cap up.

7228 - Includes a Locking Safety Hanger and pin. The older version includes a safety latching hook with shank, washer, nut and cotter pin. It is a complete assembly only.

7230 - Includes safety latching hook, hanger, pin, washers, cotter pins, bearing, washer and nut (spot welded). It is a complete assembly only. Optional Crosby Bullard Hook available.

7240 - Includes Safety latching hook, cast holder, load leveling pin, hanger pin, and cotter pins. It also comes with an optional Crosby Bullard Golden Gate Hook with core exchange of a cast holder. It comes as a complete unit only.

7250 - Same as above.

LOAD RANGE TABLE

Used as a reference to determine the number of rotations of the shaft needed to load the spring to the high side of its capacity. Mark the rear cover disc’s position in relation to the housing. A full rotation of the cover disc is equal to one full rotation of the shaft. Always load the unit to its maximum capacity. Rotation of the worm clockwise loads the spring and rotation counter clockwise unloads the tension.

LOCKING TRIGGER SNAP This type of trigger snap must be unscrewed completely before the latch will open. After installing the load the lock should be screwed down tight.
NOZZLE The cone that the cable extends through from the housing. It is intended to take any wear from the cable to prevent the cable from fraying. On the 7240 and 7250 series it will immediately show wear if the hanging suspension has been installed without proper load leveling. This saves cables, drums, springs and should be replaced should it become worn. This should be inspected regularly, as it is the first line of defense against cable wear in the drum.
